Assignment, Tests, Project
This topic introduces students to the principles and processes of project management through a series of formal workshops and the opportunity to complete a team based project in the health care sector. Areas covered include establishing project objectives and aims, teamwork, Gantt charts, and project evaluation. The topic also introduces students to systematic literature reviews and meta analysis, formal meeting management, grant writing and presentation skills. Assessment is through meeting the requirements of the project sponsor, designing and writing a grant application for the next stage of the project and evaluating the project according to principles of Health Promotion theory and practice.
Project management for health promotion is designed to provide students with an opportunity to:
Apply theoretical knowledge to the provision of health promotion activities and programs to individuals and populations.
Gain practical experience in conducting a small scale project from the initial design stage through to evaluation, using the techniques and skills of project management, systematic and evidence based literature searches and minute taking.
Develop competency in working professionally with professionals and peers in teams.
Increase their awareness of community resources in health promotion.
Broaden and strengthen their skills in performing practical tasks in health promotion such as skills in MS Project, Gannt charts, formal meeting procedures, grant writing and public speaking.
Receive feedback on their performance in completing a project that has incorporated evidence based health promotion.
Evaluate the project within the framework of health promotion.
The topic forms part of the menu of the Health Promotion and Education professional stream of the Bachelor of Health Sciences, but may be taken by any other student in the award as an elective topic.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:
Work collaboratively with others in a team where individual skills are maximised
Critically appraise research literature and use evidence and/or guidance in the planning and implementation of Health Promotion action
Practice the skills of meeting procedures and minute taking
Summarise projects aims and objectives into manageable units for discussion
Demonstrate the skills needed for lesson and session planning and group presentations
Consult with industry on project design
Report on the project through brief verbal and detailed written modes
Write an alternate form of media on their project
Design the project using the skills and techniques of project management.
