Topic description
This topic draws upon historical, sociological and educational understandings to critically analyse the construction of movement as an essential component of physical education and sport. Students will apply the theoretical constructs of the topic by participating in a variety of applied activities (dance, athletics and gymnastics), with a particular focus on adaptive practices.
Educational aims
The students will be provided the opportunity to:

  • analyse the relationships between movement constructions in physical education, sport and sociological contexts

  • consider issues associated with teaching and coaching pedagogies in relation to the range of contexts pertinent to physical education and sport

  • situate themselves in relation to the content and applied experiences within the topic as preparation for future professional experiences and industry placements.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate understanding of how particular teaching and coaching pedagogies and forms of content contribute to a diversity of movement experiences;

  • demonstrate understanding and critical awareness of how physical education teachers and sport coaches reinforce and challenge social and cultural constructions relating to movement;

  • apply theoretical constructs of the topic by teaching/coaching across a variety of applied activities (dance, athletics and gymnastics), with a particular focus on adaptive practices.
