ENGR3781 Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS) Certificate

It is an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) safety requirement that students have a valid Elements of shipboard Safety (ESS) Certificate prior to going to sea.

This topic provides practical and theoretical training in safe operations aboard a vessel. As well as receiving a certificate of completion in Elements of Shipboard Safety, students will receive a statement of completion in the following units:

1. Elements of fire prevention on board the vessel
2. Theory of combustion and methods of extinguishing fire
3. Practical training in the use of portable fire fighting appliances
4. Practical training in launching, boarding and survival in an inflatable life raft, including man overboard procedures
5. Elements of accident prevention as they apply to the shipboard work place, particularly as they apply to falls, working in close proximity to machinery and moving objects, confined spaces, personal protective equipment and hygiene

This topic aims to ensure that students understand basic safety requirements when on board a vessel.
