Topic description
This topic will prepare students for their professional experience in light of perspectives on contemporary Australian and international Early Childhood research and practice. It will introduce the legal, ethical and professional responsibilities students will be expected to execute on placement, as well as the communicative and technical research skills they will need to use when theorising and implementing their placement site's inquiry focus.

This topic is an essential pre-requisite for placement in early childhood sites.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce the professional experience program, its requirements and expectations

  • explain the professional expectations of teachers, including legal and ethical responsibilities, and of them as pre-service teachers when they undertake professional experiences

  • support the transitioning to teaching professional

  • help the students plan for effective learning about teaching while undertaking professional experiences over a sustained period of time (4 weeks)

  • ensure that the students understand how to make an effective contribution to childrens learning through a curriculum inquiry
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • recognise the legal and ethical responsibilities they will assume as they enter the teaching profession

  • demonstrate awareness of the relationships and skills that will contribute to successful professional experiences

  • practise assuming the role of the teacher with the guidance of a registered teacher

  • develop a research inquiry that will effectively contribute to young children's learning over time
