Elder abuse can occur in any setting, crossing cultural, gender and socio-economic boundaries. It has long been considered a social problem but over time there has been increasing attention to elder abuse and neglect in the context of public health, social services, health, legal and criminal justice. This topic examines the emergence of elder abuse in public discourse, challenges in the definition, terminology, prevalence and theoretical frameworks. Students will explore emerging trends that are shaping elder abuse policy and prevention internationally.
This topic aims to introduce the concepts of elder abuse and neglect, prepare students to be aware of elder abuse and neglect in all contexts and identify ways to support older people who are experiencing abuse.
