Master of Education (Gifted Education)

The Master of Education (Gifted Education) is a 72-unit coursework program offered by the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work on campus and in distance mode.

It is intended for educators whose personal, professional or research interests include a focus on the development and education of gifted students.

The Gifted Education specialisation will be identified on the student’s transcript of academic record and on the parchment presented to the student on completion of the course.

Admission requirements

Students are required to complete 72 units for the Master of Education (Gifted Education).

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification.

Advanced Entry (1.5 years) applicants who have completed an approved degree or equivalent qualification in Education, Teaching or a closely related discipline may be eligible to complete a program of 54 units.

The Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Course aims

This specialisation aims to challenge and support educators as they:

• prepare for professional work and leadership in Gifted Education
• critically analyse the various concepts of intelligence, giftedness and creativity
• critically reflect on, discuss and evaluate current theoretical perspectives related to key issues in Gifted Education
• examine the nature of the relationships and interactions between Gifted Education and General Education
• examine research principles and methods and apply those principles and methods in the evaluation, design and completion of research into current gifted educational issues.

Learning outcomes

Graduates from this specialisation will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

• the various conceptions and misconceptions of intelligence, giftedness and creativity and their implications for identification and provision
• the development, characteristics and needs of diverse gifted individuals
• a range of models relating to effective curriculum, pedagogy and support designed to meet the needs of gifted students
• seminal and contemporary research literature in the field and its impact on educational policy and practices relating to gifted students

Graduates from this specialisation will develop the cognitive, creative and technical skills to:

• critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise multiple theoretical perspectives, practices and research related to key issues in Gifted Education
• articulate evidence-informed arguments and solutions to problems relating to theoretical and practical issues
• generate questions for further inquiry

Graduates from this specialisation will be able to apply their specialised knowledge and skills to:

• reflect on and develop a personal teaching philosophy and professional learning goals relating to Gifted Education
• design, implement and evaluate effective curricula, school programs and policies for gifted students
• engage in authentic learning and assessment tasks guided by high quality criteria
• undertake independent research

Credit

Credit may be granted, on application, for: prior study completed in a relevant Honours, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters degree; accredited professional development; or relevant work experience.
