Program aims

The Honours Program in Indonesian aims to allow undergraduate students who have achieved a high academic standard to undertake advanced studies and independent research in the field of Indonesian language and culture, deepen students' knowledge and understanding of a range of core relevant analytical and conceptual frameworks, instil a higher level of awareness in students about the key political, social, economic, and cultural factors and relationships within Indonesia and Asia, and between Australia and the Asian region and facilitate on behalf of those students wishing to undertake Honours-level research in Indonesia, the opportunity to undertake the Australian University Indonesian In-Country program (ACICIS). Students will also have a opportunity to choose to engage with the community of speakers of their language of study through a Work Integrated Learning activity.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Honours Program in Indonesian, students will be able to:

  • develop a deeper, more specialised and more sophisticated knowledge of Indonesia, and the Asia-Pacific region
  • complete research activities and critical analysis to a high level
  • create an extended piece of research,
  • effectively present their research both orally and in writing, including interperting and applying ethical considerations
  • apply their knowledge to the formulation of policies and to policy advice and analysis.

Program of study

To qualify for the Honours Program in Indonesian a student must complete 36 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.

Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.

 HASS7001  Research Communication in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences  (4.5 units)
 HASS7010A  Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Honours Thesis  (4.5/18 units)
 HASS7010B  Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Honours Thesis  (4.5/18 units)
 HASS7010C  Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Honours Thesis  (4.5/18 units)
 HASS7010D  Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Honours Thesis  (4.5/18 units)
 HASS7003  Understanding Research Methods in Humanities and Social Sciences  (4.5 units)*

Or up to 9 units of honours appropriate topics with the approval of the Honours co-ordinator

*With Honours co-ordinator approval students can replace HASS7003 Understanding Research Methods in Humanities and Social Sciences with CREA7100 Understanding Research Methods in the Creative Arts (4.5 units)

**Students undertaking a creative work as part of thesis must select CREA7001 Exegesis
