The Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education is an 18-unit course offered by the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work and is available in a combination of on-campus school holiday intensives and online delivery. The program can be completed entirely by distance mode in two years of part-time study, or in a combination of delivery modes within one year of part-time study. This course is recommended for any educators or other professionals who seek to understand gifted students and their development in order to foster their achievement and well-being through challenging and supportive educational provisions.

The Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education articulates with the Master of Education, the Master of Leadership in Education and the Master of Inclusive and Specialised Education.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification.

However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Course aims

The Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education is professionally-oriented and is intended for educators and other professionals who have an interest in expanding their knowledge, skills and practice in the area of gifted education. It aims to provide students with opportunities to:

  • critically examine the gifted education research and literature and engage in inquiry and reflection
  • expand their knowledge, skills and understandings informed by gifted education research and literature
  • further enhance their insights into environmental, curricular, social and emotional implications for the development of giftedness
  • employ practical applications of gifted education pedagogy to specific contexts designed to meet the special educational needs of gifted learners
  • broaden their professional learning goals and personal philosophy of education to incorporate considerations of gifted learners and their entitlement to an equitable education

Learning outcomes 

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • justify positions relating to the philosophy, principles and practices of gifted education using research literature and policy documents.
  • apply and adapt critical, creative and caring thinking skills and effective learning and problem-solving strategies to enrich and extend learning design for gifted learners.
  • evaluate models and methodologies relating to provisions for gifted learners.
  • integrate and transform high-level knowledge gained from analysis, evaluation and critical reflection to design appropriately differentiated curriculum and educational practices for gifted learners.
  • compose an evidence-informed rationale for gifted education in their own context

Program of study

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education, a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP, or better, in each topic according to the program of study below.

Core - Year 1 topics

13.5 units comprising:

EDUC8791  Gifted Education: Conceptions of Giftedness, Intelligence and Creativity  (4.5 units)
EDUC9406  Differentiation and Inclusive Educational Practices  (4.5 units)
EDUC9792  Gifted Education: Curriculum and Differentiation  (4.5 units)

Option - Year 1 topics

4.5 units of option topics from the following list:

EDUC9793  Design Thinking to Develop and Evaluate Educational Programs  (4.5 units)
EDUC9794  Gifted Education: Affective Development  (4.5 units)

It is recommended that students complete EDUC8791 as the first topic in this course.
