A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in English by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

A student may complete a minor sequence of 22.5 units in English by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) plus an additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

A minor in English is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Education (Primary R-7), Bachelor of Arts from 1 January 2019.

The minor sequence is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Teaching (Primary R-7) from 1 January 2020

English is not offered as an extended major.

Course aims

The English major aims to:

  • equips students with a thorough grounding in the major content and concerns of literature and writing practice throughout the epochs
  • furnishes students with the skills required to apply their learning in educational and professional settings
  • aims to produce graduates who are able to communicate effectively in a range of mediums, and who are able to analyse critically different texts in a range of situations and contexts
  • endeavours to encourage learning and transferable skills in both independent and collaborative contexts
  • encourages students to connect across boundaries and value ethical behaviour through the study of quality literature and the praxis of creative writing.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the major students will:

  • be able to apply their transferable skills across a range of professions
  • will be able to communicate effectively both orally in writing
  • have developed their understanding of literature and creative writing throughout the epochs
  • have an understanding of how the cultural and literary merit of literature and other creative works are, and have been, defined
  • be able to communicate an understanding of the interpretation of literary texts.

Not every topic is offered every year. Please consult the English handbooks (available from the English Office).

Note:

  • Bachelor of Education (Middle and Secondary Schooling), Bachelor of Health Sciences students undertake an 18 unit teaching minor consisting of: 9 units of Year 1 topics plus 9 units of Year 2 or Year 3 topics (where the entry requirements are met).
  • Bachelor of Education (Middle and Secondary Schooling), Bachelor of Arts students may take either Creative Writing or English but not both.
