Program aims
The Honours Program in History aims to hone students' research and communication skills; their ability to work independently and in collaboration with an advisor and to demonstrate a commitment to maintaining the normative ethical standards of the discipline of history in their research and reporting practices. Participating in the program will support graduates to develop excellent and broad-ranging historical knowledge; grasp differing perspectives on historical events and agents and gain knowledge of the distinctive nature of the discipline including its relationships to other disciplines and its role in the community.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the Honours Program in History graduates will be able to:
- assess a variety of the competing claims and interpretations of events in particular historical contexts, recognising their salient features and the particular components of their key differences and similarities which have contributed to historical continuities and changes
- consider various methods and models of interpretation employed when pursuing particular lines of inquiry about the past and review the historical contexts which have led to various methodological changes
- compare the nature and disciplinary boundaries that mark history as a discrete form of study while recognising the appropriateness of interdisciplinary approaches and assessing the value of appropriately applying methodologies and models learnt in other disciplines
- construct a sustained, coherent and reasoned argument based on source material and consider research questions and findings explicitly in the context of existing scholarship, taking into account differing viewpoints and inconsistencies between various historical accounts
- communicate research findings and a nuanced historical argument in a range of written and oral forms within ethical standards governing the discipline of history
- continually assess their research and reporting skills while recognising the need to accumulate and update new skills knowledge throughout their professional lives.
Program of study
To qualify for the Honours Program in History a student must complete 36 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.
Not all topics are necessarily available in a given year.
