The Bachelor of Midwifery provides two entry pathways:

  • Pre-registration - requires three years of full-time study or the equivalent
    part-time in the internal mode of study only
  • Post-registration - Registered Nurse Entry - requires two years of full-time study or the equivalent part-time in the external mode of study

The course is offered by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Enrolment in the honours program may be offered to a student who meets certain academic criteria and subject to the College of Nursing and Health Sciences being able to provide appropriate resources and staff to supervise the program of study.

Admission requirements

Pre-registration: For candidates with no previous formal midwifery qualifications and enrolled nurses seeking registration as a midwife.

Registered Nurses Entry: For candidates who are eligible for registration as a general nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and who hold a current practising certificate. Selected topics may be undertaken in the internal mode of study.

Course aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with the learning opportunities they need to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice (2018) and be eligible for registration as a midwife with the NMBA. Graduates will be competent, confident practitioners in all maternity settings able to practise according to the International Definition of a Midwife adopted by the International Confederation of Midwives 2011.

Learning outcomes

Graduates of this course will be expected to be able to:

  • meet the educational requirements for registration as midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA)
  • apply the Flinders University graduate qualities to their professional practice
  • provide high-quality, safe and effective woman-centred care within different midwifery models, with a focus on the principles of primary health care and continuity of care
  • effectively communicate and professionally partner with women, communities and multi-disciplinary teams to promote choice and achieve high-quality maternal and neonatal care
  • practice culturally safe midwifery care, with particular focus on promoting the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander women and their communities
  • incorporate critical reflection and well-developed clinical reasoning skills and professional judgement in their practice
  • review, critically analyse, consolidate and synthesise knowledge and skills into practice
  • provide clinical, professional, legal and ethical midwifery in diverse contexts
  • accept responsibility and accountability for career-long learning and continued professional development.
