The Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Events is a 36-unit course offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.
The course is normally completed in two semesters full-time, or the equivalent part-time.
The Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Events articulates with the 72-unit Master of Tourism and Events, and the sequentially developed topics allow progression through the two awards.
Admission requirements
Applicants must normally have completed an undergraduate degree in Tourism and Events with a minimum GPA score of 5.0. However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances, and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature
Course aims
The course aims to meet the professional and academic development needs of graduates with an interest in tourism or events. It draws on both theoretical and practical material and provides the opportunity for students to apply both the principles and the practical aspects of the course in rapidly evolving tourism and events industries.
The course aims to:
- provide students with a broad understanding of the tourism and events industries, both in Australia and worldwide
- examine concepts in tourism and events fields and examine how they reflect the arts, environment, culture and/or heritage of a place
- produce graduates who will act ethically as professionals within their specialised field of the tourism and events industries
- provide opportunities to apply both theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to specific case studies both on and offshore
- encourage students to apply the principles and best practices of their specialised fieldsof tourism and events
- instill management and marketing skills necessary for professional endorsement within the industry.
Learning outcomes
The course is professionally oriented and is intended for people currently employed in tourism, festival or event design and management, those who would like to be so employed and those who have an interest in developing contemporary knowledge and skills.
- Upon graduating, students will be able to:
review and critically analyse current issues and trends in the tourism and events industries
- examine and assess the role of tourism and events in an international context, and generate sustainable solutions to a range of complex issues
- initiate, develop and implement event, business and/or interpretation plans in a professional manner
- communicate theoretical and practice issues in both tourism and events, both verbally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences
- undertake their work in an ethical way within the fields of festival and events and/or tourism
Credit
Students who have successfully completed the Industry Certificate in Festival and Event Design and Management at Flinders University may be eligible for 4.5 units of credit for the topic TOUR8111 Essentials of Festival and Event Design and Management.
