Major - Screen and Media
To be read in conjunction with the program of study requirements for the degree in which you are enrolled:
A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Screen and Media by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.
A student may complete a minor sequence of 22.5 units in Screen and Media by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) plus and additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.
A minor in Screen and Media is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Education (Primary R-7), Bachelor of Arts from 1 January 2019.
A student may complete an extended major sequence in Screen and Media by completing the prescribed major topics (36 units), plus an additional two topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed below.
An extended major in Screen and Media is not available to students enrolled in the double Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Arts degrees.
Course aims
The Screen and Media major aims to:
- introduce students to the major ideas which inform the study of film, television, video, and a range of digital and interactive media.
- offer students an understanding of the historical, industrial, and where appropriate, national contexts in which these media function.
- offer students an understanding of the ways in which commercial and aesthetic considerations shape these media.
- offer students an understanding of these media as cultural artefacts and social forces.
- prepare students to examine these media critically and to work in them creatively.
- provide students opportunities to explore the intersections of theory and practice in these media.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this major students will:
- have acquired a broad understanding of the history of ideas that inform the study of film, television, video, digital and interactive media.
- demonstrate an ability to think critically and express themselves clearly in the areas of screen and media studies.
- have developed advanced knowledge of the media forms in which they specialise.
