A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Australian Studies by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

A student may complete a minor sequence of 22.5 units in Australian Studies by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) plus and additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

A minor in Australian Studies is not available to students who commenced the Bachelor of Education (Primary R-7), Bachelor of Arts from 1 January 2019.

A student may complete an extended major sequence in Australian Studies by completing the prescribed major topics (36 units), plus an additional two topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed below.

An extended major in Australian Studies is not available to students enrolled in the double Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Arts degrees.

Course aims

The Australian Studies major is designed to reflect the overall academic goals of the University.

The major aims to:

  • equip students with a thorough grounding in contemporary issues and debates in Australian Studies
  • produce graduates with a critical understanding of the various ways identities are formed and represented within Australia
  • equip students to apply multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary understandings of Australian culture and society
  • furnish students with the critical and cross-disciplinary skills required to apply their learning in everyday social, educational and professional settings
  • furnish students with a thorough knowledge of local and regional Australian issues and an ability to locate them within a global context
  • produce graduates who communicate effectively in a range of mediums, and who are able to critically engage in everyday situations and contexts
  • encourage learning and transferable skills in both independent and collaborative contexts
  • encourage students to connect across boundaries and value ethical behaviour through a cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary understanding of Australian culture and society.

Learning outcomes

  • be able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge in contemporary issues and debates in Australian Studies;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the ways identities are formed and represented within Australia, and apply multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary understandings of Australian culture and society;
