The Chinese Major is offered in collaboration with Charles Darwin University (CDU). The Language topics are taught online via computer-mediated technologies using resources developed by CDU. Local face-to-face tutorial assistance is provided on-campus at Flinders. The Cultural Topics are taught on-campus by Flinders.

A student may complete a major sequence of 36 units in Chinese by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) and two Year 3 topics (9 units) plus two additional topics (9 units) from the Year 2 or Year 3 topics listed in the program of study below.

A student may complete a minor sequence of 22.5 units in Chinese by completing two Year 1 topics (9 units), two Year 2 topics (9 units) plus and additional topic (4.5 units) from the Year 2  or Year 3 Topics listed in the program of study below.

Chinese is not offered as an extended major.

Course aims

The Chinese major aims to:

  • foster the development of linguistic, socio-cultural and communicative competencies;
  • expose students to a body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to linguistic and cultural knowledges and practices;
  • develop students' ability to analyse and respond to written and visual texts in Italian of varying difficulty;
  • develop students' awareness of local and global communities of Chinese speakers;
  • develop students' awareness of, and reflection about, language and culture diversity locally and globally;
  • train students to form broad conceptual understandings of issues relating to cross- and inter-cultural communication.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the major, students are expected to:

  • be able to communicate at a upper intermediate level of competence in Chinese Mandarin;
  • be able to demonstrate broad knowledge of Chinese Culture;
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to cross- and inter-cultural communication;
  • have developed understanding and respect for local and global cultural and linguistic diversity;
  • have developed an understanding of themselves as languages learners and users.

Program of study

The following is the program of study for a 36 unit major sequence in Chinese  and should be read in conjunction with the course rule for the degree in which you are enrolled.

This is an Introductory stream suitable for beginner students. Students with background language skills should consult with the Director of Studies before enrolling.

Students complete 27 units of language topics and 9 units of culture topics.

Year 1 language topics

Year 3 language topics

 CHIN3201  Upper Intermediate Chinese Part 1  (4.5 units)
 CHIN3202  Upper Intermediate Chinese Part 2  (4.5 units0

Year 2 & 3 Culture topics

Select 4.5 units in Year 2 and 4.5 units in Year 3 from the following:

 HIST2003  Revolutionary China, 1949 - 1978  (4.5 units) 
 HIST2005  The Chinese Revolution, 1900 - 1949  (4.5 units)
 INTR2005  The Next Superpower? The Rise of China in the 21st Century  (4.5 units) 
 LLAW3270  Introduction to China's Law and Legal System  (4.5 units)#
 SCME2107  Asian Cinema  (4.5 units)*

Other cultural topics may be chosen with the approval of the Director of Studies for Chinese. Students may apply to enrol cross-institutionally in the In-Country Language Study (LAN211 or LAN311) topics offered by Charles Darwin University.

Please note that the Year 1-3 language topics are delivered in distance mode through Charles Darwin University. The cultural topics are available at Flinders University.

# LLAW3270 is delivered in China in conjunction with the East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) in Shanghai. Topic prerequisite will apply.

* SCME2107 is predominantly concerned with Chinese cinema and media.
