To be read in conjunction with the program of study requirements for the degree in which you are enrolled:
Students are normally expected to complete the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) within one year of full-time study or two years’ of part-time study. Under exceptional circumstances students may be permitted to extend the duration of the Honours program with the approval of the Course Coordinator.
The Honours degree in English – English Literature or Creative Writing stream, aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to research and present, both orally and in writing, an extended piece of research (18,000 words).
This includes building on skills developed through the completion of a major in either English or Creative Writing in literary analysis and critical analysis and an understanding of genre(s).
English Literature stream
Having completed an Honours degree in English – English Literature stream, students will have obtained an understanding of the method and meaning of completing an extended piece of research, and have developed skills in a range of research activities, including an understanding of the ethical considerations of carrying out research. Their advanced presentation skills, both written and verbal, will be a result of the presentation of this research.
They will also have developed an extended understanding of literary theory and critical theory and the way that this applies to the topics and genres which have formed the focus for their Honours study.
Students will also have developed an understanding of the public culture of writing, and how the wider community engages with literature, including the role of the writer in society.
Creative Writing stream
Having completed an Honours degree in English – Creative Writing stream, students will have obtained an understanding of the method and meaning of completing an extended piece of research, and have developed skills in a range of research activities, including an understanding of the ethical considerations of carrying out research. Their advanced presentation skills, both written and verbal, will be a result of the presentation of this research.
They will also have developed an extended understanding of the role of the writer, both as a member of the community, but also as a publisher and self-employer.
Students undertake one of the following streams:
English Literature - comprising 18 units of thesis and 18 units of core topics.
Creative Writing - comprising 18 units of thesis and 18 units of core topics.
To qualify for Honours in English a student must complete satisfactorily 36 units of study as specified below.
