The Diploma of Letters (Sports Performance Coaching) requires the equivalent of one year of full-time study. It is only offered as an exit award for students currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Letters (Sports Performance Coaching).
The stream undertaken by the student will be identified on the student’s transcript of academic record and on the parchment presented to the student on completion of the course.
Course aims
The course aims to provide students with:
- an understanding of human functional anatomy and physiology
- knowledge of coaching principles and practices with healthy populations
- knowledge of the nature of sport development and administration in Australia
- an understanding of the theoretical framework of resistance and conditioning training programs
- an understanding of the principles of sport coaching science
- knowledge of field based physiological testing from a theoretical and practical perspective
- the ability to prescribe exercise or construct training programs as a result of physiological test results
- analysis of issues related to current practice in sport coaching, management, development and research
- examine a sport or a recreational activity from a variety of exercise science perspectives
- engage with concepts related to the use of sport and games pedagogy in physical education
- an understanding of how skills in sport are acquired to enhance performance
- the opportunity to investigate a further area of interest relevant to sport performance (skill acquisition, biomechanics or psychology).
Learning outcomes
On the completion of the Diploma of Letters (Sports Performance Coaching), students are expected to be able to:
- describe the anatomical and physiological functions of the human body in relation to exercise and sport
- critically analyse and review the nature of sport development and administration in Australia
- demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical framework for training principles and exercise selection in the context of program design
- apply the principles of sport coaching science to enhance athlete education and performance
- demonstrate understanding of physiological testing procedures in sport
- demonstrate knowledge of how physiological testing fits into the annual plan
- prescribe exercise as a result of physiological test results
- design a strength and conditioning program for healthy populations
- identify the physiological demands of various lifestyle of sporting factors
- demonstrate knowledge of movement competency in reference to sports performance or injury
- define current issues related to sport coaching, management, development and research practices
- analyse sport pedagogy within physical education
- demonstrate knowledge of a further area of interest relevant to sport performance (skill acquisition, biomechanics or psychology).

To qualify for the Diploma of Letters (Sports Performance Coaching), a student must complete 36 units according to the following program of study, with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic.
