The Master of Education (Leadership and Management) is a 72-unit program offered by the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work on campus and in distance mode.
The Leadership and Management specialisation will be identified on the student’s transcript of academic record and on the parchment presented to the student on completion of the course.
Admission requirements
Students are required to complete 72 units for the Master of Education (Leadership and Management).
Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification.
Advanced Entry (1.5 years) applicants who have completed an approved degree or equivalent qualification in Education, Teaching or a closely related discipline may be eligible to complete a program of 54 units.
The Master of Education (Leadership and Management) requires that applicants have not less than two years’ work experience in an organisation.
The Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.
Course aims
This specialisation aims to:
- critically discuss how leaders build human capacity to meet the current and future challenges of their environment
- investigate how an organisation’s people can be encouraged to become lifelong learners while contributing to the success of the organisation
- engage students in learning that integrates theory with practice, action with reflection, and questions with investigation
- provide students with the opportunity to examine research principles and methods and to apply those principles and methods in the evaluation and design of research into current educational issues.
Learning outcomes
It is expected that graduates from this specialisation will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical awareness of the complex forces impacting on leadership and management in organisations
- develop a sound understanding and appreciation of current challenging issues in leadership and management at state, national and international levels through debate, discussion and research
- exhibit an enhanced appreciation of forces and values impacting on policy development and implementation in education and training
- display significant professional skills and competencies that improve the capability of practising and potential managers to handle these issues in a professional, dynamic and innovative manner
- contribute to a raised standard of managerial performance within education and other human services
- examine research principles and methods and apply those principles and methods in the evaluation and design, and conduct of research into current educational issues.
Credit
Credit may be granted, on application, for: prior study completed in a relevant Honours, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters degree; accredited professional development; or relevant work experience.
