The Graduate Certificate in Primary Health Care (Diabetes Management and Education) is an 18-unit program offered by the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution and must have a minimum of one year post-registration practice experience.

Applicants must hold a current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, or be accredited to practice in one of the following health professions as specified by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association:

  • Registered Nurse (RN or Division One)
  • Registered Midwife
  • Accredited Practising Dietitian
  • Registered Medical Practitioner
  • Registered Pharmacist
  • Registered Podiatrist
  • Accredited Exercise Physiologist
  • Registered Physiotherapist

However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Course aims

The Graduate Certificate in Primary Health Care (Diabetes Management and Education) aims to:

  • facilitate development of specialised knowledge, skills attributes for application in a range of diabetes management and educational environments.

Learning outcomes 

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  • examine the complexity of Primary Health Care issues related to diabetes management and education
  • critically analyse evidence for the provision of education and management to clients with or at risk of diabetes across the lifespan
  • implement the knowledge and skills required to effectively educate and manage clients with or at risk of diabetes across the lifespan
  • demonstrate professional entry level competence against the Australian Diabetes Educators Association National Core Competencies.

Program of study

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Primary Health Care (Diabetes Management and Education) a student must complete 18 units as specified below with a grade of Pass or NGP or better in each topic.

The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion or in 9 units or more, or failure to complete the course within four consecutive semesters may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.

Except with permission of the Dean (Education):

  • no topic may be attempted more than twice
  • a student may not include a topic which repeats work previously undertaken.

NURS8731  Diabetes Health Promotion (4.5 units)
NURS8733  Psychosocial Aspects of Diabetes Management (4.5 units)
NURS8732  Diabetes Practicum (PEP) (4.5 units)

Not all topics will be available in any given year or semester
