The Graduate Certificate in Language Teaching is an 18-unit program for qualified teachers offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. 

It can only be studied part-time and is available in internal and external modes. 

It is also available via flexible delivery for students outside Adelaide or with special needs. International students who are residing outside Australia may also undertake the course in the external mode.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution, be eligible for registration as a teacher in Australia, and have had at least one year's teaching experience in a school or other approved institution. However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Course aims

The course aims to:

  • facilitate the study of the language through the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as the study of the society and culture of the country or countries in which the language is spoken (French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish and Indonesian)
  • foster the development of successful strategies for language learning
  • introduce students to the main concepts and issues relative to the area of language teaching and learning.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:

  • demonstrate a low intermediate level of language proficiency (Beginners stream) or a mid to high intermediate level of proficiency (Advanced stream) in a chosen language
  • apply their knowledge in relation to selected cultural issues pertaining to the country / countries where the language of their choice is spoken
  • demonstrate their cross-cultural skills
  • demonstrate knowledge of foundational principles of language learning
  • apply foundational concepts, theories and issues pertaining to second language acquisition
  • plan and implement strategies for successful language learning, and evaluate their effectiveness
  • demonstrate an understanding of foundational concepts, theories and issues pertaining to second language acquisition.  

Credit

The Graduate Certificate in Language Teaching articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching and the Master of Language Studies. 18 units of credit may be granted toward the Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching and Master of Language Studies for successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Language Teaching.

Students who have completed 18 units in the Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching can choose to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Language Teaching.

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Language Teaching, a student must complete 18 units selected from one of the following programs of study with a grade of P or NGP or better for each topic:

 FREN8001  French 1, Part 1 for Teachers  (4.5 units)
 FREN8002  French 1, Part 2 for Teachers  (9 units)
 LANG8001  Introduction to Second Language Acquisition  (4.5 units)

Stream - Indonesian

 INDO8101  Indonesian 1, Part 1, for Teachers  (4.5 units)
 INDO8102  Indonesian 1, Part 2, for Teachers  (4.5 units)
 LANG8001  Introduction to Second Language Acquisition  (4.5 units)

Plus 4.5 units from

 INDO8103  Indonesian 2, Part 1, for Teachers  (4.5 units)
 INDO8200  Indonesian Culture and Society GE (4.5 units)

Stream - Italian

 ITAL8001  Italian 1, Part 1 for Teachers  (4.5 units)
 ITAL8002  Italian 1, Part 2 for Teachers  (9 units)
 LANG8001  Introduction to Second Language Acquisition  (4.5 units)

Stream - Modern Greek
