Starting 9 July 2025, all newly issued student ID cards will display your preferred first name in bold, alongside your legal name. If you’ve recorded a preferred first name in the Student System that differs from your legal first name, it will be highlighted on your card to better reflect your identity.
This initiative supports a more inclusive and respectful campus environment, allowing students to be identified by the name they use day-to-day.
No. Your current ID card remains valid. You only need to request a new one if you want your preferred name to appear on it.
Submit a request via Ask Flinders to update your preferred name in the Student System.
Your preferred name will automatically appear across key university platforms, including FLO (Canvas), ServiceOne, Microsoft Teams, and in official communications.
If no preferred name is listed, your legal first name will appear in bold on your new ID card by default.
Yes. Between 9 July 2025 and 31 December 2025, you can request one free replacement ID card that reflects your preferred name. This initiative is designed to support students who use a name different from their legal name, helping ensure your ID better represents your identity.
Once you have updated your preferred name in the Student System you can request a new card by emailing idcards@flinders.edu.au with the following details:
If you'd also like to update your photo, attach a suitable image and mention this in your request.
*For in-person collection, you must present photo identification, which may include your previous student ID card.
**If you select postal delivery, please ensure your current mailing address is included.
If you prefer, you can take your existing student ID card to Flinders Connect (Bedford Park) or City Campus in-person, and the staff there can help you update your ID card.
Please refer to the Student ID Cards web page for instructions on other types of ID card replacements.
Please allow up to 5 business days for your request to be processed due to high demand. If you selected ‘In person’ collection, your card will be ready for pick-up after this time. For postal delivery, please allow additional time for your card to arrive.
Free replacements are always available for cards that are outdated due to significant changes—such as a gender transition and associated name change, or a substantial change in appearance—where a new photo or updated details are necessary.
