The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Flexible Entry is an entry point to the University's other Bachelor of Engineering courses. Students complete one year of study in this course before transferring to the second year of any named Flinders Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) award. To graduate thus requires a total of four years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The course is offered by the College of Science and Engineering.

  • Admission requirements
  • Course aims and Learning outcomes
  • Program of study

Admission requirements

The minimum requirements for consideration for entry to all undergraduate courses are specified in detail in the University Entry Requirements.

For those completing SACE before 2017 - Successful completion of any of SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) Specialist Mathematics, Mathematical Studies or Mathematical Methods or equivalent International Baccalaureate subjects. Knowledge of SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) Physics is assumed.

For those completing SACE from 2017 - Successful completion of either SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) Specialist Mathematics or Mathematical Methods or equivalent International Baccalaureate subjects. Knowledge of SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) Physics is assumed.

Course aims and Learning outcomes

The course aims and learning outcomes are as for the specialised degree chosen at the end of Year 1.

Program of study

To qualify for a named Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree, a student must complete 144 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic. This course represents the eight core topics of the following courses:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Computer and Network Systems) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Maritime) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics) (Honours)

Core - Year 1 topics

36 units comprising:

ENGR1201  Electronics  (4.5 units)
ENGR1401  Professional Skills  (4.5 units)
ENGR1711  Engineering Design  (4.5 units)
ENGR1721  Engineering Programming  (4.5 units)
ENGR1722  Engineering Physics and Materials  (4.5 units)
ENGR1732  Engineering Mechanics  (4.5 units)
MATH1121  Mathematics 1A  (4.5 units)
MATH1122  Mathematics 1B  (4.5 units)

Year 2 - 4 topics

Students will then transfer, with full credit, to another Bachelor of Engineering course.

Notes

  1. Note that students who later transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) (Honours) will still receive 36 units of credit but may not be able to complete in minimum time due to prerequisite sequences.
  2. While this award is normally 36 units in length, in some circumstances, with the permission of the Course Coordinator, up to an additional 13.5 units may be completed.

Explanation of Notes

  1. For students to complete a Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) (Honours) in four calendar years, the prerequisite sequence must usually be started in the first year.
  2. Some students, because of failures, credit or wishing to maintain a 75% load, may need to enrol in more than the normal 36 units to remain full-time (for example, for AusStudy or Visa purposes).  This rule permits a little flexibility by allowing extra topics to be completed in this award (for which the students will get credit on transfer).
  3. Students are nor eligible to transfer from this course in to the Bachelor of Engineering (Software) (Honours)

Every effort has been made to ensure the information published on the Course Rule pages is accurate at the time of publication. Flinders University reserves the right to amend its curriculum without prior notice, and will update the Course Rules to reflect any amendments at the earliest opportunity.
