Topic description
This topic consolidates students’ language study and introduces them to an advanced level study of Biblical (Koine) Greek. Grammar, syntax and the analysis of idiomatic usage of the language are studied via the reading of complex passages from the New Testament, the Septuagint and extra-canonical material, including papyri and inscriptions. An introduction to papyrology is given.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • consolidate skills and understanding of grammar, syntax and idiomatic usage of biblical (Koine) Greek

  • develop extended skills in reading and translating passages from the New Testament, the Septuagint, papyri and inscriptions

  • provide foundational skills in the study of papyrology
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate specialist skills in translating complex passages from the Greek New Testament and other Koine Greek texts

  • critically analyse the nuances of Greek texts, and research the cultural and material aspects of reading and writing in the Graeco-Roman world
