Topic description
This topic is designed to build on the knowledge and skills acquired in the first semester of third year. It sets out to develop further students' proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Classes will continue to deal with a number of the major features of the Spanish language, particularly grammar, appropriate to the upper intermediate level. Students will use a produce a range of complex texts in Spanish. The topic will also extend students' understanding of the Spanish-speaking world through the use of readings and audiovisual materials concentrating on contemporary issues pertaining to Hispanic countries.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • consolidate students' knowledge of Spanish grammatical structures and vocabulary acquired at previous levels

  • develop learners' knowledge and ability to use moderately complex grammatical structures and vocabulary in their spoken and written Spanish

  • develop students' ability to understand moderately complex written texts and speech in Spanish

  • develop further students' communicative competence through participation in activities involving group or pair interaction

  • develop active participation in collaborative learning and foster independent language learning

  • recognise and interpret socio-cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic should be able to:

  • identify the main points of articulate standard speech in Spanish

  • communicate in speech and writing on a range of familiar topics, using moderately complex language

  • understand moderately complex written texts and speech in Spanish

  • recognise, reproduce and describe grammatical, syntactical, lexical and phonetic structures acquired throughout the semester

  • understand a range of socio-cultural features of Hispanic cultures
