Topic description
This topic is designed to build on and consolidate the language learning of the first and second year topics of the Spanish major. It aims to strengthen students' proficiency in the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Classes will cover features of the Spanish language, particularly grammar, appropriate to the upper intermediate level, such as the use of the subjunctive. At the same time, they will extend students' knowledge of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world through the use of readings and audiovisual materials that focus on contemporary issues pertaining to Hispanic countries.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop learners' knowledge and ability to use moderately complex grammatical structures and vocabulary in their spoken and written Spanish

  • develop students' ability to understand relatively complex written texts and speech in Spanish

  • enhance students' communicative competence through participation in activities involving exposure to different kinds of media and group or pair interaction

  • expose students to independent and collaborative learning and to language learning skill development

  • enable students to recognise and interpret a range of socio-cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify the main points of articulate standard speech in Spanish

  • communicate in speech and writing on a range of familiar topics, using moderately complex language

  • understand moderately complex written texts and speech in Spanish

  • recognise, reproduce and describe grammatical, syntactical, lexical and phonetic structures acquired throughout the semester

  • understand a range of socio-cultural features of Hispanic cultures
