Topic description

This topic explores the broad domain of upper limb rehabilitation for people with musculoskeletal disorders. Students will consider specific presentations chosen to reflect varying pathophysiological processes and patient experiences and central principles relevant to this population group. Recent research and the pragmatic application of this research to clinical practice will be discussed. Students are offered the opportunity to choose the focus of assessment tasks to ensure relevance to their own clinical practice.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Broaden the student's understanding of the epidemiology of musculoskeletal injury, common aetiologies, and the role of the multidisciplinary team in the management of these conditions
  • Develop the student's ability to evaluate current interventions in the field, to apply sound clinical reasoning to the rehabilitation of those with an upper limb musculoskeletal condition
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Evaluate and apply core principles underlying the planning, development and delivery of musculoskeletal rehabilitation
  2. Critically appraise and synthesise recent literature in regards to musculoskeletal rehabilitation
  3. Develop a detailed rehabilitation plan for an individual undergoing rehabilitation for a upper limb musculoskeletal condition
  4. Analyse and reflect upon their own clinical practice to ensure ongoing best practice
