Topic description
This topic will introduce students to basic and applied neurosciences relevant to therapists and their practice. Students will explore neuroscience concepts from the basic organisation of single neurons to the complex organisation and function of the sensory, motor and integrative systems in humans. The topic will introduce students to neuropathology and dysfunctions of the nervous system commonly seen by therapists, including the effects of aging on the sensori-motor system. Students will be introduced to the concept of neuroplasticity in the context of therapeutic rehabilitation and will gain an understanding of how applied neuroscience is informing contemporary clinical practices.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to establish specific knowledge of basic and applied neuroscience for therapists.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Describe the organisation of the nervous system including the spinal cord, brainstem and cerebrum, including its development

  • Discuss the structure and function of the sensory system, including somatic sensory, visual and vestibular systems.

  • Discuss the structure and function of the motor system including the motor cortices, the cerebellum and basal ganglia.

  • Discuss the structure and function of the integrative system, including the autonomic nervous system and the cranial nerves

  • Discuss neuropathology of selected disorders of the nervous system.

  • Discuss neuroplasticity and the promotion of neuroplasticity in the context of clinical neurorehabiliation.
