This topic is an introduction to key theories, principles and approaches that shape contemporary health promotion practice. Students will employ a socioecological framework to analyse the determinants of health behaviours and strategies for change at the individual, group and population level. This topic explores contemporary concepts including health literacy, digital health technologies and social media, and emphasises their potential for harnessing change in conjunction with traditional approaches to health promotion.
This topic aims to:
Develop theoretical and practical understanding of contemporary health promotion practice, drawing on approaches from a range of social and behavioural disciplines
Apply a socioecological framework to describe determinants of health and health behaviours
Explore the process, challenges and skills involved in health behaviour change
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
Determine priorities for health promotion action from available evidence using research literature and local, state and national data
Analyse determinants of health and health behaviours using a socioecological framework
Critically assess the strengths and weaknesses of diverse theories, models and approaches to health promotion
Apply relevant theories and models to describe the processes, challenges and skills involved in individual and community health behaviour change
Identify and evaluate the use of appropriate individual, group and population strategies for health promotion, including health education, social media strategies, community development, advocacy and policy development
Recognise and apply health literacy principles and strategies to health promotion practice
Collaborate effectively with peers
