This topic provides students with an understanding of structural principles for analysis and design. The topics included are: Internal member forces (SFD and BMD), composite bending with transformed sections, deflections of beams, global buckling of slender columns, design of steel beams, concrete mix design, design standards (e.g., AS3600, AS4100, AS1170), analysis of statically indeterminate structures, stress transformations including Mohr's circle.
Structural engineering includes the analysis and design of structures that resist applied loads. It is important for all civil engineers to understand the range of concepts, calculations and procedures used for safe design and construction of a variety of structures. This topic provides students with an understanding of the concepts associated with structural engineering and focuses mainly on structural analysis of reinforced concrete, steel, masonry and timber members.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:
Understand the behaviour of structural beams under flexural loads
Perform fundamental designs of steel beams
Determine buckling loads in slender steel columns
Perform concrete mix designs
Perform fundamental designs of reinforced concrete beams
Be familiar with Australian Standards relevant to all aspects of structural engineering
Determine internal force distribution for statically indeterminate structures
Perform stress transformations
Report on a significant aspect of structural engineering
