The topic introduces students to the fundamentals of computer networks and cybersecurity. With a focus on Internet protocols, the students will study the principles, standards, processes and technologies associated with computer networking and data communications, and the cybersecurity associated with these. This will include the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network protocols, network communication, network classifications, aspects of communications cybersecurity, vulnerabilities, threats, risk assessment, and legal and ethical issues.

Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic, students are expected to be able to:
Explain the basic types of network architecture and protocols
Discuss the role and importance of network communication models and standards
Explain security issues in the context of computer networks
Analyse and evaluate network communications vulnerabilities and threats and apply appropriate controls
Explain the legal and ethical implications of security in the context of networks and networked communications
Survey and evaluate a selection of emerging networking and cybersecurity technologies
