This topic includes: The medical device industry; concepts associated with the innovation, design, and development of medical devices; medical device regulation; intellectual property; commercial viability.
Educational aims
This topic provides students with an overview of the medical device industry, and knowledge and understanding of the process of innovation and commercialisation within that industry.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  1. Understand the concepts associated with the innovation, design, and development of medical devices
  2. Undertake a commercial viability assessment on a potential medical device product
  3. Understand medical device regulation and intellectual property, and the responsibilities of a medical device design engineer in relation to these
