Topic description
In this topic students will examine in depth a problem which has emerged in the literature of cognition and instruction. Students will examine contemporary research involving the use of cognitive psychology to address educational issues. Students will prepare a literature review in a given area and will become familiar with research techniques used in that area.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • foster research-informed enquiry, critical analysis, synthesis, evaluation and reflection as essential educational practices;

  • further extend students' ability to critically review and evaluate research literature in the fields of research methods, and cognitive psychology and educational practice;

  • extend students' abilities to design a research investigation based upon a synthesis of extant research literature in association with an identified teaching-learning problem;

  • extend students' abilities to generate an in-depth literature review, in the appropriate academic style, which critically reviews and evaluates a selected set of academic literature;

  • develop advanced capabilities for self-regulated learning;

  • lead improvements in professional decision making;

  • lead the informed construction of educational policy, whether local, national or global;

  • translate knowledge gained from reading, discussion, research and writing into educational practices;

  • lead the dissemination of knowledge gained from reading, discussion, research and writing to professional colleagues;

  • lead interdisciplinary and intercultural partnerships and work collaboratively;

  • lead informed, constructive debate;

  • engage in and lead professional reflective practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • demonstrate extended knowledge of contemporary research and practice in the field of cognitive psychology and educational practice;

  • analyse and synthesise research procedures that can be used to address issues arising in the field of cognitive psychology and educational practice;

  • design a research proposal for an independent research project in the field of cognitive psychology and educational practice, including selection of research methods and design of educational interventions;

  • justify the selection of research methods for an independent, original research project;

  • contribute to informed debate about research, practice and policy in the field of cognitive psychology and educational practice;

  • understand and adhere to ethical research standards and practices;

  • demonstrate high standards of academic literacy.
