Topic description
Students will undertake set readings; contribute to class discussions; identify available teaching resources and classroom/school practices; and work collaboratively to critically analyse case-studies, related to the social and emotional determinants of positive mental health and wellbeing that impact upon diverse school communities.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • engage in enquiry as an essential educational practice;

  • develop knowledge, confidence and courage to work to enhance the ability of diverse educational communities to promote positive mental health and wellbeing;

  • work collaboratively with professional colleagues, parents and young people to optimise mental health and wellbeing in educational communities

  • engage in professional reflective practice
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • critically read, analyse and synthesise current theory, research and practice;

  • critically analyse ways in which structural, societal and individual factors impact upon mental health and wellbeing;

  • select and/or design appropriate resources and intervention strategies for promoting social and emotional wellbeing in diverse educational contexts;

  • design, deliver, review feedback, and evaluate a small program of professional education to professional colleagues about promoting social and emotional wellbeing;
  • critically reflect upon their own professional practices;

  • demonstrate high standards of academic literacy.
