Topic description
Students will be introduced to the range of behaviours problem issues including: when behaviour becomes problem behaviour; differing professional views of behaviour; home, school and community issues in addressing behaviour problems; mental ill-health and mental health issues; and, specific behaviours including both internalising and externalising behaviours.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • explore the issues in defining a behaviour problem
  • explore different professional views of behaviour
  • examine the effects of home, school and community influences on behaviour
  • understand the relationship between mental ill-health, mental health and behaviour problems
  • explore the educational implications of a variety of specific behaviour problems including externalising and internalising behaviours
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic students will be able to:

  • define a behaviour problem in context
  • demonstrate understanding of how different professions identify a behaviour problem and provide support for addressing the behaviour
  • explain the interaction between home, school and community factors in identifying and addressing behaviour needs
  • describe the relationship between mental health and ill-health behaviours and the impact these have on actions by families and professionals
  • demonstrate understanding of the application of research on identification and education of students with a range of specific behaviours
