Topic description
This Professional Teaching Practice occurs in the first year of the Master of Teaching program. Four consecutive weeks (20 days) plus 5 planning days are spent in a metropolitan or country secondary, or primary/secondary combined school. Emphasis is placed on the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching programs. Close links are established between curriculum studies at Flinders and school curricula. At the conclusion of this teaching experience, a written report is required to indicate progress towards compliance with the Professional Standards for Entry to the Register for the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia and the pre-service teacher's readiness to continue into the final teaching practicum.
Educational aims
For pre-service teachers to:

  • appreciate the range of professional and other roles that contribute to a working school community
  • develop co-operative and effective professional relationships with students and colleagues and where appropriate with parents
  • draw connections between theoretical understandings about learning, teaching and a range of classroom practices
  • begin identifying themselves as educators, reflecting on their own strengths, interests and areas for professional and personal growth
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, pre-service teachers should have:

  • demonstrated an understanding of a teacher's various roles and responsibilities within a school context
  • shown an ability to develop effective professional relationships with students and colleagues
  • demonstrated an understanding of the links between how students learn and teaching methodology
  • selected or designed appropriate teaching methods, instructional procedures and resources for given teaching tasks
  • demonstrated the development of skills in managing the learning environment
  • discussed factors which influence the selection of curriculum content for students
  • practised assessing and recording student learning
  • demonstrated the ability to evaluate their teaching performance in collaboration with their supervising teacher(s)
