Topic description
This topic will prepare pre-service teachers for their professional experiences. It will introduce the expectations of professional behaviour for the teaching profession, including legal and ethical responsibilities. Pre-service teachers will be introduced to the expectations for their behaviour and learning during the days of their professional experiences. This lecture series is an essential pre-requisite for placement in school settings.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • introduce the professional experience program, its requirements and expectations

  • explain the professional expectations of teachers, including legal and ethical responsibilities, and of them as pre-service teachers when they undertake professional experiences

  • support the transitioning to teaching professional

  • help the pre-service teachers plan for effective learning about teaching while undertaking professional experiences over a sustained period of time (4 weeks)

  • ensure that the pre-service teachers understand the most significant aspects of their behaviours and performance in the classroom while practising the art of teaching
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the professional experience program and its requirements

  • Demonstrate recognition of the legal and ethical responsibilities they will assume as they enter the teaching profession

  • Transition to the role of teaching professional

  • Demonstrate awareness of the many factors that will contribute to successful professional experiences

  • Be ready to practise assuming the role of the teacher with the guidance of a registered teacher
