Topic description

This topic examines the biological, psychological and behavioural nature of sensory, physical and multiple disabilities and examines the educational, support and management strategies required for effective learning and community participation.

Educational aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide information about the concepts, knowledge and skills relating to the identification and ethical assessment of individuals living with sensory, physical and/or multiple disability
  • Explore intervention strategies and supports available to individuals living with sensory, physical and multiple disability
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Determine the basic functions of the human nervous system and the extent to which impairment contributes to sensory, physical and/or multiple disability to an individual’s development
  2. Apply knowledge of the characteristics and needs of individuals who experience sensory, physical and multiple disability in order to plan, develop and discuss intervention strategies for use in a range of environments
  3. Apply principles of the ethical administration of assessments, interpret findings and formulate, discuss and justify intervention strategies to a case study example
