Assumed knowledge
This topic requires student to have an introductory understanding of concepts and perspectives around disability and human service provision. Additional reading can be provided for students without previous participation in disability services or topics related to disability.

Topic description
This topic examines the role of direct service provision in the lives of people living with disability and their families. Community participation, education, health services and lifestyle choices provide the context for exploration of practices that support a quality life for people living with disability. Students undertake a placement within an organisation providing support to individuals living with disability and their families
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn about:

  • Working alongside professionals in the provision of services to people living with disability and those who support them.

  • Developing an awareness of key issues and professional competencies.

  • Basic research and critical analysis skills.

  • Current research and practice relating to provision of services to individuals living with disability.

  • Issues relating to provision of quality services such as duty of care and meeting standards and accreditation processes.

  • Developing effective professional relationships with people living with disability and their significant others.

  • Develop an ability to be self reflective about their own practices and performance in the provision of services to people living with disability.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • Undertake basic research skills, identify and discuss the key concepts included in relevant government legislation around human service provision.

  • Demonstrate an emerging ability to evaluate the service delivery practices of their placement agency in line with relevant disability service standards.

  • Identify through observation and interview, elements of effective practice and quality service delivery within their host agency.

  • Locate and analyse organisational policies

  • Reflect on their professional development
