Topic description
This topic will introduce students to the histories and futures of the cultural sector, its key concepts and debates, and different models of success in the cultural sector. Students will develop an understanding of the cultural sphere and how enterprise operates within it. They will explore questions such as: What are some of the key sites of creative innovation at play in our cultural sphere and what are the key debates around our creative futures? What are the facts influencing the figure of the entrepreneur, the diverse factors underpinning the meteoric rise of YouTube stars, and what is the place of the artist in urban renewal. In responding to these questions, this topic will introduce students to a range of models of success in the creative and cultural industries.
Educational aims
To introduce students to the foundations of creative enterprise and cultural industries as they begin to understand and apply the concepts of the discipline
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Explain the important concepts and debates in the field of cultural and creative enterprise.
  2. Apply the concepts of creative enterprise to assess local, regional, national and global creative development projects.
  3. Evaluate the creative sphere using concepts and case studies.
