Master of Language Studies

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or an equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution, which includes a major, completed with a Credit or better Grade Point Average, in one or more of the following languages: French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish and Indonesian. However, under special circumstances and subject to specific conditions, the Dean (Education) may admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Course aims

The course aims to:

provide an advanced level of understanding of one of the following areas of specialisation: Cultural Studies and/or Applied Linguistics, relative to French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish, Indonesian, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), according to the option chosen
expose students to an in-depth body of knowledge relative to the above area of specialisation
train students to form broad conceptual understandings while gaining depth of knowledge of a particular area of specialisation, through coursework and through a supervised study project
provide advanced practical language training
provide vocational knowledge and abilities in areas relevant to the language professional.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, graduates will:

demonstrate broad knowledge of Cultural Studies and/or Applied Linguistics Studies, relative to French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish, Indonesian, or TESOL, according to the area of specialisation chosen
demonstrate highly advanced critical understanding of complex theories and principles underpinning the chosen area of Language Studies, and knowledge of current issues therein
have successfully completed a research project in a specific area of Language Studies
be able to communicate at a high level of competence in language skills intrinsic to specialised vocational applications
demonstrate highly advanced level of knowledge and skills in relation to cross-cultural communication
demonstrate understanding and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity at both local and global levels.

Credit

Students who have completed an Honours degree in French, Italian, Modern Greek, Spanish or Indonesian, or the Graduate Diploma in Language Teaching at Flinders University may be eligible to receive 36 units of credit.

Those who have completed a Graduate Certificate in Language Teaching at Flinders University may be eligible to receive 18 units of credit.

Credit may be granted, on application, for equivalent post-graduate or Honours studies, completed at another tertiary institution.

Program of study

To qualify for the Master of Language Studies a student must complete 72 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study:

49.5 units chosen from topics offered in:

Group A - Language and Cultural Studies
Group B - Applied Linguistics
Group C - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

These topics should be chosen in consultation with the Course Coordinator.
