These rules apply to the degree of Master of Health and Clinical Research, which is a higher degree by research.

1. Introduction
1.1 The Master of Health and Clinical Research comprises:
i. 18 units of advanced coursework topics (one-third of the course), and
ii. A time-based, supervised research project culminating in a thesis (two-thirds of the course).
2. Admission Requirements
To be accepted for admission to the Master of Health and Clinical Research, an applicant must:
i. Have a Bachelors degree with Honours from an Australian university (which must include relevant studies and field of research), or the equivalent qualification as approved by the relevant authorised delegate, or a Bachelors degree with 5 years of clinical or industry work experience, and
ii. Meet the English language requirements specified by the University, and
iii. Satisfy the University that they are reasonably likely to be able to successfully complete the requirements of the award within the maximum duration.
Exceptions can be approved in accordance with the Higher Degrees by Research Policy.
3. Course Aims
Graduates at this level will have specialised knowledge and skills for research, and/or professional practice and/or further learning.
4. Learning Outcomes
4.1 Knowledge
Graduates of the course are expected to demonstrate specialised and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge relating to the theory, research and evidence, policy and practice in health and clinical settings.

Graduates of the course are expected to demonstrate the capacity to independently:

4.4 Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to apply for admission to a PhD.
5. Program of study
5.1 For a student to qualify for the degree of Master of Health and Clinical Research, the student must pass the following topics on a full-time equivalent basis*, the standard program of study is as follows
i. Pass the following topics:
COMS9001 Communicating Research (4.5 units)
HLTH9110 Research Methods in Heath and Clinical Settings (4.5 units)
HLTH9111 Research Design and Ethics in Health and Clinical Settings (4.5 units)
Plus one elective topic at postgraduate level in an area related to the research topic
ii. Receive a determination that the degree be awarded following thesis examination:
HLTH9995 Masters of Health and Clinical Research Thesis (36 units).
*Full-time candidature is dependent on the availability of topics.
5.2 For the time-based research project, the student will undertake a supervised research project, culminating in submission of a thesis.
6. Progression
6.1 For coursework topics, the award of a grade of Fail (F):
i. no topic may be taken more than twice, or
ii. in more than 18 units or more may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress and will be dealt with under the Review of Student Progress Policy.
6.2 Students may not enrol in the time-based research project until they have satisfactorily completed all required coursework topics (see Rule 5.1) and successfully complete an Interim pre-Confirmation of Candidature Milestone.
6.3 Progression in the time-based research project is governed by the Higher Degrees by Research Policy.
6.4 The degree must be completed full-time within four consecutive semesters or part-time within eight consecutive semesters; a lesser period may be set for students granted credit for previous studies.
7. Thesis
7.1 The submitted thesis must meet all requirements for presentation and lodgment specified in the Higher Degrees by Research Policy and must not contain:
i. material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma, or
ii. any material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made in the text of the thesis or in the notes.
8. Assessment
8.1 Assessment of coursework topics will be in accordance with the Statement of Assessment Methods for each individual topic.
8.2 The thesis examination will assess whether the student has demonstrated the following:
i. an advanced and integrated understanding of a complex body of knowledge in the field of health and clinical research
ii. a significant contribution to knowledge
iii. ability to an original investigation or testing of ideas
iv. competence in independent research or experimentation
v. a thorough understanding of the appropriate techniques in the field demonstrated both by their application and a thorough review of the literature
vi. critical use of source material, experimental results (where appropriate) and published works
vii. an appreciation of the relationship of the special theme to the wider field of knowledge or area of professional practice, and
viii. the capacity to present well-written work.
