Undergraduate Certificate in Spanish

The Undergraduate Certificate in Spanish can be completed in six months of full time study and is offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

The minimum requirements for consideration for entry to all undergraduate courses are specified in detail in the University Entry Requirements.

Course aims

The course aims to:

  • provide a sound, basic level of proficiency in Spanish within a curricular framework that fosters the development of linguistic and cultural competency of students
  • introduce students to a wide body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to Spanish and the cultural practices, artistic expression, and composition of hispanic societies
  • provide foundational cognitive and metacognitive training to enhance language acquisition and form broad conceptual understandings about languages and applied linguistics

Learning outcomes 

  • communicate at a basic level of competence in Spanish, including obtaining and providing services and information
  • recognise the main socio-cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world
  • demonstrate general knowledge of cultural studies relative to hispanic countries
  • develop an understanding of language acquisition
  • understand main theories and principles of language studies, and knowledge of current issues therein
  • demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to inter-cultural communication and develop understanding and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity

Program of study

To qualify for the Undergraduate Certificate in Spanish, a student must complete 18 units , with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study.

Core - Year 1 topics

18 units comprising:

SPAN1201  Introductory Spanish Part 1  (4.5 units)
SPAN1202  Introductory Spanish Part 2  (4.5 units)
SPAN2211  Keys to the Spanish and Latin American Worlds  (4.5 units)
LING1000  Strategies for Language Learning  (4.5 units)
