Undergraduate Certificate in French

The Undergraduate Certificate in French can be completed in six months of full time study and is offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

Course aims

The course aims to:

• provide a sound, basic level of proficiency in French within a curricular framework that fosters the development of linguistic and cultural competency of students
• introduce students to a wide body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to French and the cultural practices, artistic expression, and composition of French and francophone societies
• provide foundational cognitive and metacognitive training to enhance language acquisition and form broad conceptual understandings about languages and applied linguistics

Learning outcomes 

• communicate at a basic level of competence in French, including obtaining and providing services and information
• recognise the main socio-cultural aspects of the French-speaking world
• demonstrate general knowledge of cultural studies relative to francophone countries
• develop an understanding of language acquisition
• understand main theories and principles of language studies, and knowledge of current issues therein
• demonstrate knowledge and skills in relation to inter-cultural communication and develop understanding and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity

Program of study

To qualify for the Undergraduate Certificate in French, a student must complete 18 units , with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the following program of study.
