The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - General Entry is an entry point to the University's other Bachelor of Engineering courses. Students complete three semesters of study in this course before transferring to the second year of any named Flinders Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) award. To graduate thus requires a total of four and a half years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The course is offered by the College of Science and Engineering.

Admission requirements

The minimum requirements for consideration for entry to all undergraduate courses are specified in detail in the University Entry Requirements.

Successful completion of SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) General Mathematics, SACE Stage 1 (Year 11) Mathematics or equivalent International Baccalaureate subjects are normally required for entry.  

Applicants who have completed either SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) Specialist Mathematics or Mathematical Methods or equivalent International Baccalaureate subjects are eligible to apply for entry direct to a specialised Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree.

Course aims and Learning outcomes

The course aims and learning outcomes are as for the specialised Bachelor of Engneering (Honours) degree chosen at the end of 1.5 years.

Program of study

To qualify for a named Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree, a student must complete 144 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic as described in the course rule for the chosen named degree. Students may transfer to a named Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation)(Honours) course at any point after the successful completion of 36 units of study, including MATH1121 and PHYS1701.

Core – Year 1 topics

27 units comprising:

 ENGR1201 Electronics (4.5 units)
 ENGR1401 Professional Skills (4.5 units)
 MATH1121 Mathematics 1A (4.5 units)
 MATH1701 Mathematics Fundamentals A (4.5 units)
 MATH1702 Mathematics Fundamentals B (4.5 units)
 PHYS1701 Physics for the Modern World (4.5 units)

Option – Year 1 topics

Plus 9 units selected from:

 COMP1102 Computer Programming (4.5 units)
 COMP1711 Database Modelling and Knowledge Engineering (4.5 units)

or

 ENGR1721 Engineering Programming (4.5 units)
 ENGR1722 Engineering Physics and Materials (4.5 units)

Core – Year 2 topics

9 units comprising:

 ENGR1711 Engineering Design (4.5 units)
 MATH1122 Mathematics 1B (4.5 units)

Option – Year 2 topics

9 units selected from:

 COMP1002 Fundamentals of Computational Intelligence (4.5 units)
and
 COMP1712 Software Engineering Principles and Practice (4.5 units)
or
 ENGR1732 Engineering Mechanics (4.5 units)
and
 MMED1005 How your Body Works: Human Physiology and Structure (4.5 units)
or
 EASC1101 Earth and Environmental Science (4.5 units)
or
4.5 units of elective from anywhere across the university as long as pre-requisites are met

Notes

  1. Students entering with SACE Stage 2 (Year 12) Physics may, with the permission of the Course Coordinator, substitute another topic for PHYS1701 Physics for the Modern World.
  2. Students who wish to transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Software)(Honours) should select all COMP option topics
  3. Students who wish to transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical)(Honours) should select ENGR option topics and MMED1005
    Students who wish to transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental)(Honours) should select ENGR option topics and EASC1101
    Students who wish to transfer to any other Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation)(Honours) should select ENGR option topics and an elective
