Topic description

This topic will explore the relationship between science communication and policy decision-making using examples past and present. The use and misuse of science in the development of policies will be studied. Policies based on scientific evidence, as well as policies governing scientific practices, will be examined.

Educational aims

This topic aims to develop and extend students' understanding of and skills in:

  • Using scientific evidence to guide decision making
  • Applying science communication to policy decision-making
  • Types of decisions and decision-making styles
  • Understanding policies based on, and policies governing, scientific practices
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of perceptions of decision making
  2. Describe methods of communicating science to policy makers
