Topic description
This topic focusses on the concept of numeracy across the curriculum and the use of professional ICT in the design and delivery of pedagogical material. The key ideas addressed include: the nature of numeracy and critical numeracy; the professional numeracy and ICT demands in the teaching profession; the role of numeracy and applications of ICT within different curriculum areas; the inherent numeracy demands and opportunities within these curriculum areas for middle and secondary students; and the opportunities and limitations associated with the use of ICT in the design of integrated pedagogical materials.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop a positive disposition toward numeracy and the use of ICTs

  • understand the responsibilities associated with teaching numeracy and the use of ICTs in the middle and secondary years in content area classrooms
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • understand the difference between mathematics and numeracy

  • identify examples of numeracy in the community

  • make connections between their specialist teaching areas and numeracy

  • understand the power of and use of quantitative information to influence people's thinking

  • use ICT as a tool to enhance student learning outcomes and support students to become more aware of their needs as learners
