The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is a 72-unit coursework program offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. The course is offered over four semesters full-time, or the equivalent part-time.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution.

Course aims

This degree aims to develop disciplinary knowledge in the field of second language acquisition and specifically in the area of TESOL. Students will develop the capacity to critique second language teaching methodologies and gain insights into the interaction between culture and language as it relates to TESOL, while investigating English language learning and teaching in diverse contexts. They will also identify research trends in the field of TESOL and determine how to appropriately use them in their own practice

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  • debate current theories in second language acquisition
  • evaluate and critique classroom issues related to TESOL
  • compare various second language teaching theories and methodologies, and communicate them (as well as the differences in them) to a range of audiences
  • evaluate the appropriateness of second language teaching methodologies and approaches and apply adaptations to a range of classroom teaching scenarios
  • examine current literature in the field of TESOL with an informed, critical perspective
  • defend their high level of knowledge and skills in TESOL research (Coursework with Research Component stream only).

Credit

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and/or the Graduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or an approved equivalent degree in a related field may receive credit upon admission to the Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Program of study

To qualify for the Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), a student must complete 72 units in one of the following streams with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below:

Students must achieve a minimum grade of Distinction in ESOL9007 Research in TESOL to be eligible to enrol in the Coursework and Research Component stream. The research component (project) must be undertaken in Year 2 (or equivalent part-time).
