The Master of Screen and Media Production is offered by the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences over two years of full time study, or part-time equivalent. The course articulates with the Graduate Certificate in Screen and Media Production and the Graduate Diploma in Screen and Media Production.

Admission requirements

Students are required to complete 72 units for the Master of Screen and Media Production.

Applicants must normally hold an approved bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) from an approved tertiary institution.

Intermediate Entry (1.5 years) - No further student intake Applicants who have completed one of the following awards may be eligible to complete a program of 54 units:

  • an approved bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in Screen and Media, or in a closely related discipline from an approved tertiary institution; or
  • an approved Graduate Certificate in Screen and Media (or equivalent qualification) from an approved tertiary institution; or
  • an approved Honours degree (or equivalent qualification) from an approved tertiary institution.

Advanced Entry (1 year) applicants who have completed one of the following awards may be eligible to complete a program of 36 units:

  • the Graduate Diploma in Screen and Media Production; or
  • an approved Honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in Screen and Media Production from an approved tertiary institution.

Under exceptional circumstances and subject to specific conditions, the Dean (Education) may admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Course aims

This course aims to provide students with:

  • advanced theoretical knowledge and applied skills in a range of video production and post-production practices;
  • high-level communication skills to enable them to collaborate with peers on screen production projects;
  • an in-depth understanding of issues and theory in a related field of study;
  • research and writing skills in screen studies;
  • a practical understanding of professional activities in a related field of study;
  • in-depth knowledge of a specific area of screen production, obtained through a combination of coursework and research;
  • vocational knowledge and skills in the field of screen and media studies; and
  • the ability to apply a specialised, systematic and coherent body of knowledge relating to documentary film-making, digital media and screen studies.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, graduates will have acquired:

  • detailed knowledge of theory and practice in one of the nominated related fields of study;
  • an advanced level of knowledge of the principles underlying research in a chosen field of study;
  • detailed knowledge of how this field of study is applied to screen productions;
  • knowledge of the principles underlying documentary production in the specific area of study, and the capacity to apply these principles to the production of documentary films;
  • knowledge of the technical, administrative and financial considerations involved in the production of documentary films and digital media;
  • detailed knowledge in a breadth of subject areas relating to the nominated related fields of study and documentary production;
  • competence in a range of commonly employed documentary production practices, including project research, script writing, production and post-production techniques;
  • the ability to collaborate with peers on screen productions;
  • high level competence in written and oral communication, problem-solving and critical thinking; and
  • the knowledge and skills to undertake research into documentary subjects, write scripts for documentaries and apply advanced techniques in the production of documentaries and related screen productions.
