The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education is an 18-unit program offered by the College of Medicine and Public Health.

This articulated, multi-disciplinary program is designed to provide health professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to deliver clinical education in health service settings.

This is an emergent specialty field of education characterised by a symbiotic relationship between the learner, an experienced clinical educator and the health service. This course is suitable for educators in both clinical and academic settings.

The course articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education and the Master of Clinical Education by Coursework with the sequentially developed topics allowing progression through the three awards. Students who have completed the graduate certificate normally are awarded credit for 18 units of topics towards the graduate diploma.

Admission requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution. However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature. 

Course aims

The graduate certificate will provide health professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to deliver clinical education in health service settings. This is an emergent specialty field of education characterised by a symbiotic relationship between the learner, an experienced clinical educator and the health service.

The course aims to provide health professionals with an understanding of foundational principles of symbiotic clinical education.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge 
Graduates of the course are expected to have advanced knowledge relating to the theory, policy and practice of symbiotic clinical education within the health professions, universities and health services.

Skills 
Graduates of the course are expected to have advanced cognitive, technical and communication skills relating to the theory, policy and practice of symbiotic clinical education, and be able to:

  • critically analyse information, problems, concepts and theories relating to symbiotic clinical education and the educational programs offered across a range of health professions and disciplines
  • analyse learning and teaching pedagogies and practices
  • transmit knowledge, skills, ideas and solutions related to symbiotic clinical education to others, including stakeholders within the health professions, universities, health services, governments and community.

Application of knowledge and skills
Graduates of the course are expected to be able to apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate:

  • autonomy, adaptability and responsibility as an educational practitioner
  • capacity to supervise health professionals learning in clinical practice
  • well-developed judgement relating to the theory, policy and practice of symbiotic clinical education within the health professions, universities and health services.

Program of study

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education, a student must complete 18 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.

13.5 units comprising:

 HLED9102  Symbiotic Clinical Education for the Health Professions 2  (4.5 units)
 HLED9103  Symbiotic Clinical Education for the Health Professions 3  (4.5 units)

 HLED9106  Leadership & Change for the Health Professions  (4.5 units)

 HLED9108  Research Skills in Clinical Education  (4.5 units)
 HLED9112   Facilitating Interprofessional Learning (4.5 units)

*Or a 4.5 unit alternative postgraduate level option topic selected with the approval of the Course Coordinator, provided topic prerequisites are met.
